How S10 Robot Medical Scribe Can Improve EPIC EHR Usability?

Share

EPIC is one of the largest health IT companies in the United States. It provides a platform for storing and sharing medical records, as well as a variety of other services. EPIC has been in the business of EHR since 1976 and has become the country's largest provider of this service. EPIC's mission is to make healthcare better by improving patient care, reducing costs, and expanding access to care. The enormous functionalities that EPIC EHR provide usually slow down the physician's documentation turnaround time significantly. We in the business of Virtual Medical Scribing understand how and why robot medical scribes can significantly boost the productivity of EPIC EHR. However, if you were unsure about robot medical scribes previously, we've provided you with this case study to show you their true potential and usefulness for your institution.

A study, entitled A usability and safety analysis of electronic health records:a multi-center study, was published by the Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association. It was conducted by researchers with MedStar Health's National Center for Human Factors in Healthcare, the American Medical Association (AMA), and others, and was funded by the AMA. Researchers focused on the two largest EHR vendors, Epic and Cerner, who comprise more than 50 per cent of the market.

They conducted the study at 2 sites per vendor, or four health systems. The aim of this study was to describe and quantify the difference in usability and its possible effects on safety. They discuss discrepancies in efficiency metrics, accuracy, and mistakes kinds between and within vendors that were seen when doctors completed routine clinical activities using EHR technologies that had been independently installed at several hospital systems.

Six distinct jobs from the clinical situations were examined in order to measure usefulness and safety, including two electronic prescriptions, two laboratory orders (troponin and lactic acid), and two orders for diagnostic imaging (radiograph and MRI) (oral acetaminophen and an oral prednisone taper). In segmenting the screen capture footage by task, the tasks were examined. The statistical studies used descriptive statistics and variance analysis (IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows, Version 22.0). The statistical comparison of time and click data was done with only accurate replies.

The Study Results

The results of this study reveal wide variability in task duration, clicks, and accuracy when completing basic EHR functions across EHR products from the same vendor and between products from different vendors. The results highlight the variability that can be introduced from local site customization, given that products from the same vendor resulted in vastly different performance results. There was an eight-fold difference in time and clicks for certain tasks from one site to another. Across the different tasks, error rates varied widely, reaching 50% for taper orders, which are generally not well supported by the four implemented EHRs in the emergency medicine setting. Depending on the task, EHR errors can have serious patient safety consequences. The figure below provides an illustration of time and clicks by site showing the variability between physicians within each site and the variability across sites.

The primary outcome measures were task duration, the number of clicks needed to complete each task and accuracy. The time to complete an imaging order varied from 25 seconds at one site to more than a minute at another. Placing an imaging order required an average of eight clicks at one site, while the same task at a different site averaged 31.

One of the approaches to improve the usability of the EHRs is to ensure that the physicians do have to perform the clicks and spend time in documentation by using the Robot Medical Scribe
